About Discount Truck Repair
A reference for people who need a truck fixed: what the fault code means, what the repair should cost, and who nearby can do it. Independent, ad-supported, and explicit about both.

What this is
Three things, in the order people need them. A fault code reference that tells you what an SPN, FMI, or P-code actually means and whether you can keep driving. A repair cost reference that tells you what the fix should run, so you can judge a quote instead of guessing. And a directory of repair shops that we have called on the phone, with the date of that call printed on the listing.
It covers every class of truck, not just Class 8 — medium duty, Class 3 through 5 chassis, diesel pickups, trailers, and reefer units. The reefer and pickup categories are here because they are the worst-served on the open web, and in the pickup case because the existing content is largely published by people selling emissions deletes.
What this is not
- We do not repair trucks. There is no shop behind this site. We have no bays, no technicians on payroll turning wrenches, and nothing to gain from you choosing one repair over another.
- We do not sell leads. Nobody pays us for your phone call. Shop phone numbers on this site are the shop's real number, dialled directly, not a tracking line.
- We are not a substitute for a technician. Everything here is reference material. A brake, steering, or coupling decision made from a web page instead of an inspection is a decision made badly.
- We will not help you delete emissions equipment. Not a guide, not a parts link, not a shop listing. We publish an honest page about what a delete actually costs you — the fines, the resale hit, the insurance and CSA exposure — and the legal alternatives. That is the whole of our coverage and it is not going to expand.
How we make money, plainly
Three ways, all of which should be visible to you without having to look for them.
Advertising
Most pages carry display advertising. Every unit is labelled “Advertisement”. Ads never appear above the answer on a fault code page — the verdict box comes first, always, because someone reading that page may be on a shoulder with a derating truck. We do not run ads at all on the pages where an ad would be a conflict of interest: the submission forms, the trust pages, and this one.
Paid directory listings
Shops can pay for an enhanced listing — photos, service detail, a website link — at $99 to $299 a year. Paying does not get a shop listed, does not move it up the page, and does not protect it from being removed if the verification call goes badly. Free listings and paid listings are ordered by the same rules. Paid listings are labelled.
Affiliate links
Some links to tools and parts earn us a commission. They are disclosed on the page carrying them. We are not going to recommend a scan tool we have not used, which is why the scan tool page currently explains what each tier of tool can do and recommends nothing.
The firewall
No advertiser, no paid listing, and no affiliate relationship has any influence over editorial content. A shop that pays us gets a better-looking listing and no other advantage. If an advertiser asks us to change a cost range, the answer is no and we will say publicly that they asked.
The standard a page has to clear
Most sites in this category are template fills: eight thousand pages with a city name swapped in. We would rather have three hundred pages that are actually worth reading. The rules that enforce that are not editorial guidelines — they are validations that fail the build.
- A city directory page needs three verified listings or it does not exist; its shops roll up to the state hub instead. 8 cities currently clear that bar on seeded records, which is how the rule was tested — we hold no phone-verified listings yet, and a city page standing on seeded records alone is kept out of the index until a real call has been made.
- A fault code page needs either a credentialed technician's annotation or three cited technical sources plus real cost data. Otherwise it stays a draft, out of the sitemap.
- A cause-frequency ranking needs a real sample or the component renders nothing. We do not print a percentage we cannot defend.
- Every missing fact is a visible
TODO(verify)marker, not an invented one.
Who writes it
Research and editorial are in-house. Technical review is contracted out to credentialed technicians, because we are not ones. Every technical page names its author and its reviewer, and the contributor page lists their certifications.
Reviewer positions are currently unfilled
2 technical reviewer slots are contracted but not yet filled. Rather than publish a plausible-sounding name and a certification number nobody can check, those bylines are marked [UNFILLED] and every page waiting on them is a draft. Inventing a technician is the specific form of fraud this whole site is a reaction to.
Getting in touch
Corrections are the messages we most want. If a number is wrong, a shop has closed, or a diagnostic step is dangerous, tell us — the contact form attaches the page you came from automatically.
