What SPN 168 FMI 1 means

SPN 168

SPN 168 is battery potential / power input 1 — the voltage the controller sees on its main power feed. On a 12-volt commercial vehicle this should sit near battery voltage with the engine off and near alternator output with it running.

FMI 1

FMI 1 means data valid but below normal operating range, most severe level. The measurement is trustworthy and the voltage is genuinely low, as opposed to FMI 4 which would indicate a low-voltage circuit fault on the sensing input itself.

Read together, SPN 168 FMI 1 is the ECM saying: battery potential / power input 1 — below normal, most severe. The SPN identifies which parameter, the FMI identifies how it failed. Two codes sharing an SPN but carrying different FMIs are different faults with different repairs, which is why the SPN alone is never enough.

How a technician diagnoses it

    Start the engine and measure charging voltage at the batteries at fast idle.

    Perform a voltage drop test on both the positive feed and the ground path with the alternator loaded. Voltage drop finds corroded connections that a resistance check misses.

    Load test each battery individually. A bank is only as good as its worst cell, and one bad battery will pull the whole bank down overnight.

    Inspect the belt and tensioner. A belt that squeals on a cold start or shows glazing is not driving the alternator at rated speed.

    Measure parasitic draw with everything off after the modules have gone to sleep.

    Clear all fault codes after the charging system is repaired and re-scan. Low voltage sets spurious codes across the bus, and chasing them before fixing the voltage wastes hours.
