What SPN 3251 FMI 0 means

SPN 3251

SPN 3251 is the aftertreatment 1 diesel particulate filter differential pressure — the pressure drop measured across the DPF by a sensor plumbed to taps upstream and downstream. It is how the ECM infers soot and ash loading without being able to see inside the filter.

FMI 0

FMI 0 means data valid but above normal operating range, most severe level. This is the top of the escalation, above FMI 16 (moderately severe). The reading is credible and it is high.

Read together, SPN 3251 FMI 0 is the ECM saying: dpf differential pressure — above normal, most severe. The SPN identifies which parameter, the FMI identifies how it failed. Two codes sharing an SPN but carrying different FMIs are different faults with different repairs, which is why the SPN alone is never enough.

    Read soot load percent and ash load percent, and check hours and miles since the last filter cleaning against the OEM interval.

    Check the regeneration history for cancelled, incomplete, or excessively frequent regens. Rising regen frequency in the weeks before this fault is the usual pattern.

    Look for upstream faults — injector, EGR, turbo, charge air — that would explain excess soot. Cleaning a filter without fixing what loaded it buys a few weeks.

    If loading is genuine, remove the filter for professional cleaning and flow testing rather than replacing it. A cleaning and flow test also tells you whether the substrate is cracked.

    Perform a parked regeneration only after the filter and sensor are known good. Forcing a regen on a cracked or ash-saturated filter risks a thermal event.
