How Much Does a Truck Clutch Replacement Cost?

Drivetrain · Class 8 tractor · Class 6–7 medium duty · Class 3–5

Short answer

$1,025$6,560

TODO(verify): A Class 8 clutch job typically lands between $1,800 and $4,000 all-in — roughly $900 to $2,200 in parts and eight to fourteen hours of labor, since the transmission has to come out to reach it.

What you are actually paying for

Clutch replacement is a labor-dominated job. The clutch itself is not especially expensive; getting to it means pulling the transmission, and that is where most of the invoice comes from. Because the transmission is already out, this is the one time when replacing the rear main seal, the pilot bearing, the release bearing, and the clutch brake costs almost nothing extra. Declining those and paying to pull the transmission again in eighteen months is the expensive choice.

What it costs in each situation

What moves the price

Transmission removal time
This is the bulk of the bill. Access, driveline configuration, and whether the truck has a PTO or a crossmember in the way all move the hours.
Clutch type and size
Two-plate versus single-plate, self-adjusting versus manual-adjust, and organic versus ceramic facing all price differently and are not interchangeable choices.
Flywheel condition
A flywheel with heat checking or scoring must be resurfaced or replaced. Installing a new clutch against a bad flywheel is the most common way to buy this job twice.
What else gets done while it is apart
Rear main seal, pilot bearing, release bearing, clutch brake, and input shaft seal are all cheap now and expensive later.
Transmission or AMT calibration
Automated manuals need the clutch actuator recalibrated after the job. Confirm the shop has the tool before you book.

Symptoms that lead here

  • Clutch slipping under load — engine speed rises without matching road speed
  • Chatter or shudder when engaging from a stop
  • Pedal free play out of adjustment, or a pedal that has gone to the floor
  • Difficulty getting into gear or grinding on shifts
  • Burning smell after grade climbing or heavy manoeuvring
  • On an AMT, repeated clutch actuator or wear-limit fault codes

How to pay less without buying trouble

  1. 1

Get the flywheel condition assessed in writing before the quote is final. A resurface added mid-job is a common source of quote-to-invoice drift.

  2. 2

Do the seals and bearings now. The labor is already paid for.

  3. 3

Ask for the clutch brand and facing type on the quote. A quote that just says 'clutch kit' can be anything.

  4. 4

Adjust on schedule if the truck has a manual-adjust clutch. A neglected adjustment shortens clutch life substantially.

  5. 5

Compare a dealer quote against an independent heavy-truck shop. On a labor-heavy job the hourly rate difference compounds across twelve hours.

  6. 6

Ask whether the shop offers a road test after the job. Chatter that shows up on the first loaded grade is easier to fix before you leave.

Questions people ask before they book this

How long does a truck clutch last?

It depends far more on how it is driven than on mileage. Trucks that spend their lives on the highway see very long clutch life; trucks doing city delivery, heavy haul, or frequent starts on grades see much shorter. TODO(verify): mileage distribution from submitted receipts once we have data.

Can I drive with a slipping clutch?

For a short distance to a shop, sometimes. But a slipping clutch generates heat, and heat is what destroys the flywheel — which turns a clutch bill into a clutch-plus-flywheel bill. It can also leave you unable to pull away on a grade in traffic.

Is the flywheel always replaced?

No. It is inspected and resurfaced if it is within limits, replaced if it is not. Ask the shop to show you the measurement rather than take the recommendation on faith.

Why is an AMT clutch job more expensive?

The parts are broadly comparable, but the actuator has to be recalibrated with a manufacturer tool afterwards, and access is sometimes tighter. Confirm calibration is on the quote.
