How Much Does an In-Frame Engine Overhaul Cost?

Engine · Class 8 tractor · Class 6–7 medium duty

Short answer

$7,625$57,400

TODO(verify): A Class 8 in-frame overhaul commonly runs $15,000 to $30,000 — $7,000 to $16,000 in parts and forty to eighty hours of labor. An out-of-frame rebuild or a reman long block costs more and takes longer.

What you are actually paying for

An in-frame overhaul rebuilds the top end and the cylinder kits without pulling the engine from the chassis: liners, pistons, rings, bearings, and a reconditioned or replaced head, with the block staying where it is. It is the decision point in a truck's life. The honest question is not what the overhaul costs but what the truck is worth afterwards, what the alternative is, and whether the rest of the driveline is going to need the same conversation in a year.

What it costs in each situation

What moves the price

Engine family
Parts kits and standard repair times differ substantially between engine families, and some engines are markedly more labor-intensive to work on in the chassis.
What the teardown finds
A cracked block, a scored crank journal, or a damaged cam turns an in-frame into an out-of-frame mid-job. A good shop quotes a contingency for this rather than pretending it cannot happen.
Kit quality
OEM, OEM-supplier, and generic kits price very differently. On a rebuild that has to last several hundred thousand miles, this is not the place to economise blindly.
What gets done at the same time
Water pump, oil cooler, turbo, injectors, and the aftertreatment are all accessible or already disturbed. Deferring them means paying access labor twice.
Downtime
Often the largest real cost. Two to four weeks off the road at your revenue per day may exceed the parts bill. Run the number through our downtime calculator before choosing between an in-frame and a reman.
Warranty
A reman long block typically carries a longer and broader warranty than a shop rebuild. That difference has real monetary value on a truck you intend to keep.

Symptoms that lead here

  • Oil consumption climbing steadily with no external leak
  • Excessive blow-by at the crankcase breather
  • Low compression or a failed cylinder leak-down test
  • Loss of power and rising fuel consumption
  • Coolant in oil or oil in coolant
  • Knocking or heavy bottom-end noise
  • Metal in the oil filter or in an oil analysis report

How to pay less without buying trouble

  1. 1

Get an oil analysis and a leak-down test before committing. They cost very little and they tell you whether an overhaul is actually the right repair.

  2. 2

Price a reman long block against an in-frame. The parts cost more but the downtime and warranty often make it the better total number.

  3. 3

Ask what the contingency is if the teardown finds a machining requirement, and get it in writing before the engine comes apart.

  4. 4

Do the accessible items — water pump, oil cooler, injectors, turbo — during the same teardown.

  5. 5

Run your actual downtime cost per day. For many owner-operators the downtime exceeds the parts bill and changes which option is cheapest.

  6. 6

Be honest about the rest of the truck. A fresh engine in a chassis with a tired transmission and worn drivetrain is a partial solution at a full price.

Questions people ask before they book this

What is the difference between an in-frame and an out-of-frame overhaul?

In-frame leaves the block in the chassis and replaces liners, pistons, rings, and bearings. Out-of-frame removes the engine so the block can be machined and the crankshaft ground. Out-of-frame costs more and is chosen when the block or crank needs work an in-frame cannot address.

When is an overhaul worth it versus buying another truck?

It depends on the chassis condition, the remaining life in the driveline, what a comparable truck costs, and what your downtime costs. An overhauled engine in a sound chassis is often the cheapest usable mile available. An overhaul in a worn-out chassis rarely is.

How long does an in-frame take?

TODO(verify): typical shop turnaround. The labor hours are only part of it — parts availability and machine shop time extend the calendar well beyond the billed hours.

How many miles should an in-frame last?

A properly done overhaul on a sound block should give a substantial second life. TODO(verify): mileage distribution from submitted receipts. We will not publish a number until we have data behind it.
