How Much Does a Truck Air Compressor Replacement Cost?
Air brakes and air system · Class 8 tractor · Class 6–7 medium duty · Class 3–5
Short answer
$123–$5,720
TODO(verify): Air compressor replacement on a Class 8 tractor generally runs $1,000 to $3,200 — $500 to $2,200 for a reman or new compressor plus three to eight hours of labor, more if the air dryer and contaminated lines go with it.
Reman air compressor, Class 8 tractor, compressor only
- Parts
- $500–$1,500
- Labor
- 3–8 hr × $125–$210/hr = $375–$1,680

What you are actually paying for
An air compressor that is passing oil does not just need replacing — it has been contaminating the whole air system while it failed. Oil-fouled air dryer desiccant, oil in the tanks, and oil-swollen valve seals downstream are all part of the same repair, and a shop that quotes only the compressor is quoting for the part of the job you can see. This is also a safety-critical system: air supply failures are brake failures.
What it costs in each situation

What moves the price
- Compressor mounting and access
- Gear-driven compressors mounted at the back of the engine take considerably longer than belt-driven units on the front.
- Reman versus new
- Reman compressors are standard fleet practice and cost substantially less. What matters is the rebuilder and the warranty.
- System contamination
- A compressor that passed oil has fouled the dryer and possibly the valves downstream. Replacing only the compressor leaves the contamination in place.
- Air dryer condition
- The dryer is the compressor's protection. A dryer that has not been serviced is a common reason the compressor failed in the first place.
- Governor and unloader
- Cheap parts that cause expensive symptoms. A misadjusted governor can look exactly like a failing compressor and costs a fraction to fix.
Symptoms that lead here
- Slow air build-up, or the system never reaching governor cut-out
- Air pressure warning buzzer at idle or under load
- Oil discharging from the air dryer purge
- Oil in the wet tank when drained
- Continuous cycling, or the compressor never unloading
- Knocking or squealing from the compressor
- Low pneumatic supply pressure fault codes
How to pay less without buying trouble
- 1
Check the governor and the air dryer purge valve before condemning the compressor. Both are cheap and both mimic compressor failure.
- 2
Drain the tanks regularly and note what comes out. Oil in the tanks is early warning, weeks or months ahead of a failure.
- 3
Service the air dryer cartridge on schedule. It is the least expensive component protecting the most expensive one.
- 4
If the compressor passed oil, insist the dryer and system decontamination are on the quote. Skipping it kills the new compressor.
- 5
Do a leak-down test before assuming a build-up problem is the compressor. A large leak looks identical from the driver's seat.
- 6
Keep the repair documented. Air system work shows up in inspection history and matters at resale.
Questions people ask before they book this
Can I drive with a failing air compressor?
No, not once air pressure is affected. Low air pressure on a commercial vehicle is a brake defect and an out-of-service condition, and if pressure falls far enough the spring brakes apply on their own. Get it repaired where it sits.
Why is there oil coming out of my air dryer?
Almost always a compressor passing oil past worn rings. The dryer is doing its job by discharging it, but the desiccant is being destroyed in the process and the compressor is on its way out.
Do I have to replace the air dryer too?
If the compressor was passing oil, yes. Oil-saturated desiccant does not dry air, and the new compressor inherits a system that is already wet and contaminated.
How long should an air compressor last?
Highly variable, and driven by air dryer maintenance, duty cycle, and how much the system leaks. A truck with a large air leak runs its compressor constantly. TODO(verify): service life distribution from submitted receipts.
