How Much Does a DEF Pump Replacement Cost?

Aftertreatment · Class 8 tractor · Class 6–7 medium duty · Class 3–5 · Diesel pickup

Short answer

$688$5,180

TODO(verify): DEF pump or supply module replacement usually lands between $900 and $3,000 — $700 to $2,200 for the pump or module plus one and a half to six hours of labor, depending on whether the pump is serviced separately from the tank header.

What you are actually paying for

The DEF pump is the part of the SCR system most likely to strand you, because when it stops delivering fluid the truck stops being able to meet emissions and the inducement clock starts. Two things decide the size of this bill: whether the pump is serviced as a standalone unit or only as part of a tank header assembly, and whether the failure was the pump itself or the fluid that went through it. Crystallised DEF in the lines will kill a new pump as quickly as it killed the old one.

What it costs in each situation

What moves the price

Whether the pump is a separate part
This is the single biggest variable. Some OEMs sell the pump alone; others sell only a complete tank header module at several times the price.
Tank removal
If the tank has to come down, the labor climbs and the job may need the tank drained and the fluid disposed of properly.
Crystallisation in lines and injector
Urea crystals will restrict the new pump immediately. Clearing or replacing lines and the injector is part of a durable repair.
Heater circuit condition
DEF freezes below roughly 12°F, and the heater circuit that prevents it is often integrated with the pump module. A failed heater in a cold climate causes repeat failures.
OEM versus aftermarket
Aftermarket DEF pumps exist at a fraction of OEM price. TODO(verify): comparative reliability data — this is a part where the cheap option has a reputation worth checking.

Symptoms that lead here

  • DEF dosing or pressure fault codes
  • Inducement warnings and countdown messages on the dash
  • DEF level not dropping when the truck is running
  • Audible pump running continuously or not at all
  • White crystalline deposits at the DEF injector or line fittings
  • SCR conversion efficiency faults with good DEF in the tank

How to pay less without buying trouble

  1. 1

Ask whether the pump is available separately from the header before authorising a header assembly. The difference can be thousands.

  2. 2

Test the DEF before replacing anything. Bad fluid causes pump faults and refilling is cheap.

  3. 3

Have the lines and injector checked for crystallisation. A new pump into a restricted line fails quickly.

  4. 4

Buy DEF from high-turnover sources and keep it out of prolonged heat. Degraded fluid is a recurring cause of SCR repairs.

  5. 5

In cold climates, verify the heater circuit works before winter rather than after a frozen line splits.

  6. 6

Do not clear inducement codes and keep driving. It does not reset the timer and the logged history follows the truck.

Questions people ask before they book this

Can I drive with a failed DEF pump?

Only until the inducement escalates. Once the SCR system cannot dose, the truck works through its warning stages and then limits speed to a level that is unsafe on a highway. Treat the countdown as your deadline.

Why did my DEF pump fail?

Most often contaminated or degraded fluid, crystallisation, or a heater failure that let fluid freeze in the module. Age and hours matter too, but fluid quality is the lever you control.

Are aftermarket DEF pumps worth it?

They cost far less and some fleets use them successfully. TODO(verify): we do not yet have enough receipt data to compare failure rates honestly, and we will not guess.

Will a new pump clear my inducement?

If the pump was the fault, yes — after the OEM reset procedure and a successful dosing cycle. Clearing codes without repairing the fault does not release inducement.
